Many people ask where to start when it comes to creating a “good clean home”, and the bedroom and nontoxic bedroom furniture is arguably one of the most important places to invest in to start, as you are likely spending nearly (if not more) half of your life in that room. Also, when you sleep is when your body is in full on repair and recovery mode, so it’s important to make it as clean as possible to create the ideal environment for rest.

Here are a few of my favorite nontoxic bedroom essentials:

  1. A Green, Clean Mattress and Pillows – I am completely obsessed with my Avocado mattress and pillows, which is the #1 rated natural mattress featuring GOLS organic certified latex, GOTS organic certified wool, and GOTS organic certified cotton. Absolutely no polyester, polyurethane foams, or toxic fire retardants. I have the king mattress with the attached pillow-top and I can truly say I have never loved a mattress more. A bonus is I can rest assured that I am sleeping safely, without any off-gasing or chemicals that can be found in traditional mattresses.
  2. Organic Bedding – I have all Parachute duvets, quilts, and bedding (and towels!) which have held up wonderfully over time. I absolutely love the look of the washed linen (I have both white and bone versions of the duvet). Parachute is Oeko-Tex certification meaning their products are safely made without any harmful chemicals or synthetics.
  3. Vintage or Reclaimed Furniture – Shopping vintage can be a great nontoxic option, not to mention sustainable. Not only can you stumble on amazing finds, but buying second hand somewhat ensures that any product off-gasing that happens in the first couple years of product life has already happened. I found my vintage kilim rug on Etsy. The bench at the end of my bed from West Elm has many of the same elements in place, and is made from reclaimed pine certified to Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) standards.
  4. Incorporate Plant Life – Adding plants to your bedroom helps filter the air, and also adds to a beautiful space. The one pictured above is a philodendron plant from The Sill.
  5. Nontoxic scents – I prioritize nontoxic scents and candles throughout the house, but truly the most nontoxic scent is through essential oil diffusers. I love this one from Vitruvi, and you can pick calming scents like Dusk to drift off into sweet dreams.

I hope this was a helpful start in setting up your nontoxic bedroom and how you can better incorporate nontoxic bedroom furniture into your oasis! xo
